Gynecomastia is when the male breast grows and takes on a similar appearance to the female breast.  Gynecomastia is a problem observed in almost half of the male population. Since it feminizes men’s bodies, it can adversely affect their mental state and cause discomfort, especially in summer. Gynecomastia can occur for no reason, as a result of some hormonal disorders or as a side effect of some medications.

Gynecomastia often occurs when the level of estrogen (female hormone) in the body rises and the level of testosterone (male hormone) decreases. This condition occurs physiologically in infants, adolescents and the elderly. Gynecomastia is observed in @ of adolescents and in 5 of older men. Most of the gynecomastia during adolescence disappear within a few years. In addition, gynecomastia can be observed in various hormone disorders, some types of cancer, especially lung cancer, and systemic diseases such as AIDS. Various heart medications, cancer medications, hormone-containing drugs, and drugs can also cause gynecomastia.

It is also a very common problem that occurs due to obesity and that the breast looks large due to fat without growth in the mammary gland.

First, the cause of gynecomastia should be understood. If the patient is thought to have a hormone disorder, he is first evaluated by an endocrinology specialist. Hormone tests are performed. If there is a disorder, treatment is done for it. In gynecomastia that occurs during adolescence, it is usually enough to wait. Most of them recover within a few years. Gynecomastia other than these can be corrected by surgical procedures.

In most of the patients with gynecomastia, it is possible to get adequate results with liposuction alone. Ultrasonic liposuction (VASER) can be used in patients with excess and dense breast tissue other than fat. In cases where this is not enough, excess breast tissue is removed with a short incision made around the nipple. Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia and in the operating room environment. The operation takes 1-2 hours depending on the procedure to be performed.

It is necessary to use a special corset after surgery. After two days she can take a bath. After three days, he can go for a check-up and then return to work and start his normal daily activities; he can even drive. Gynecomastia surgeries are usually trouble-free and satisfying procedures. Prolonged swelling in the first months may make patients nervous, but these are often temporary. The most common problem that may be experienced in the long term is that the procedure has not made the breast small enough. In these cases, a second action may be required. Another problem that may be encountered is the irregularities that may occur after liposuction. Depressions and fluctuations may be encountered, but with good planning and meticulous surgery, such problems can be minimized.

If the patient gains weight, there may be some growth in her breasts, but there is never a return to the state she was in before surgery.
